S#!T Our Moms Say

A zine of Southern Sayings

Growing up in the South, you hear some pretty interesting ways of speaking. Many phrases are so common, you may not even notice that they’re actually quite strange. A lot of people, myself included, during teen and early adult years may discount Southern slang as embarrassing or uneducated. For example, I’m sure you’ve probably heard a relative drop the most unhinged opinion you’ve ever heard and follow it with “Bless their heart…”

As I age, however, I’ve come to appreciate the Southern drawl anew. Part of this is due to a nostalgia for what I perceive to be simpler times, but it also comes from a newfound interest not only in what people say, but how they say it.

Please enjoy the following hand-drawn phrases, affectionately poking fun at my native land. I turned several of these into a mini zine (long live print!).
